No effort runs itself. If you turn your own employee loose in the field they may produce, but their methods, approach and overarching objectives will diverge from your company's. We believe that actively and regularly managing employees yields the best long term results, and ensures that their efforts are consistently concurrent with your goals.
We use two tools to ensure this. First, use of SalesForce.com is mandatory. Your company is provided access for one user (additional users can be purchased) for each of our reps you engage. All our employees use the same tool and therefore everyone has a complete view of each parties activities. We can mutually observe how follow-up is conducted, how projects are moved to a "yes" or "no", how aggressively leads are developed, etc. We can copy you on as many or as few emails as you wish and keep you in the loop that way, or you can elect to simply monitor and participate through the robust SalesForce.com tool.
Secondly, you have access as a "commenter" on your designated rep's performance review and appraisal through the web based SuccessFactors.com. Included with this tool is an ongoing notes applet which lets you capture relevant performance related thoughts and notes contemporaneously during the rating period (quarterly) so they are readily available when the rating time arrives. These are our employees and we provide the final rating - but your input is welcome and critical to our mutual success.
